How to Select Air Purification Equipment for Explosion-Hazard Dust Applications

How to choose an explosion-proof dust collector suitable for Jiangsu industrial scenes

Explosion-proof dust collectors are mainly used to deal with industrial dust that has the risk of combustion or explosion. They are not indoor air purification products in the ordinary sense. There are many categories of manufacturing industry in Jiangsu. Different factories have obvious differences in dust properties, processing air volume, temperature and humidity, continuous operation time and on-site hazardous areas. Therefore, equipment selection should be based on actual working conditions.

When choosing an explosion-proof dust collector, you should not only compare the equipment price or filtration method, but also comprehensively consider the dust explosion characteristics, system air volume, filter material temperature and humidity resistance, explosion-proof configuration, installation space and subsequent maintenance costs.

1. First determine whether the dust has an explosion risk

The first step in selecting an explosion-proof dust collector is to confirm whether the dust being processed is flammable or has an explosion risk. Wood powder, aluminum powder, magnesium powder, coal powder, plastic powder, grain dust and some chemical powders may burn or explode under certain concentrations and ignition conditions.

Users should try to provide parameters such as dust explosion lower limit, minimum ignition energy, maximum explosion pressure and explosion index. If there is a lack of relevant data, risk assessment can be conducted through professional testing or combined with material safety data.

2. Combined with the environmental and working conditions characteristics of Jiangsu region

The humidity in some areas of Jiangsu is high, and industrial sites may also have problems with temperature differences, condensation and moist dust. If condensation occurs inside the dust collector, it will easily cause the filter bag to become sticky, increase equipment resistance, and make dust cleaning difficult.

Therefore, when selecting, attention should be paid to the moisture resistance, waterproof and oil-proof performance of the filter material, equipment insulation measures and inlet temperature control. For coastal areas, chemical industry parks or highly corrosive environments, the anti-corrosion performance of the box, air ducts and accessories should also be considered.

3. Correctly calculate the processing air volume

The processing air volume is an important parameter in the selection of explosion-proof dust collector. It should be calculated based on the number of dust-producing equipment, type of dust collection hood, distance to the dust collection point, pipeline resistance and simultaneous use coefficient.

1. The air volume is too small: the negative pressure of the vacuum hood is insufficient, and dust easily spreads to the workshop.

2. Excessive air volume: The filtering wind speed, operating resistance and fan energy consumption increase, and the life of the filter bag may be shortened.

3. Air volume matching: able to take into account dust collection effect, system resistance and operating cost.

4. Choose the appropriate filtration method

Common filtration methods for industrial explosion-proof dust collectors include bag filtration, cartridge filtration and wet dust removal. Different methods are suitable for different dusts and working conditions. The superposition of multiple filtration methods cannot simply be understood to mean that the effect must be better.

1. Bag dust removal: suitable for most dry industrial dusts, with large filtering area and strong adaptability.

2. Cartridge dust removal: The equipment is relatively compact and suitable for some occasions with fine dust and limited space.

3. Wet dust removal: suitable for some dusts that are safer when exposed to water, but wastewater, sludge and corrosion issues need to be considered.

Activated carbon is mainly used to absorb some organic waste gases and odors, and is not the main component of explosion-proof dust filtration. Whether to configure activated carbon should be determined based on whether the exhaust gas contains corresponding organic pollutants.

5. Confirm whether the explosion-proof configuration is complete

The safety of the explosion-proof dust collector does not only rely on an explosion-proof motor or anti-static filter bag, but is composed of multiple measures. The specific configuration should be designed based on dust hazard, equipment installation location and piping system.

1. Antistatic filter bag or conductive filter material.

2. The box, air duct and metal parts must be reliably grounded and connected to equal potential.

3. Explosion-proof motors, electrical control boxes and electrical components that meet the requirements of hazardous areas on site.

4. Explosion vent discs, flameless explosion vents, explosion-proof valves or explosion suppression systems.

5. Spark detection, spark extinguishing or high temperature particle pre-separation device.

6. Structure for airtight dust discharge, air locking and preventing secondary diffusion of dust.

6. Select equipment specifications based on operation mode

Whether the equipment operates intermittently or continuously for 24 hours will affect the filter area, cleaning method, fan configuration and backup requirements. Continuous operating conditions should focus on filter bag life, cleaning stability, compressed air supply and convenience of replacement of wearing parts.

1. Confirm the daily running time and annual running time.

2. Confirm whether non-stop dust cleaning and continuous dust discharge are required.

3. Confirm whether backup fans, backup filter units or bypass systems are needed.

4. Choose fixed, mobile or modular equipment according to the on-site space.

7. Pay attention to the matching of filter material and temperature and humidity

Filter material should be selected according to dust temperature, humidity, corrosiveness and abrasion. Ordinary polyester, coated filter media, aramid, PPS, P84 and glass fiber filter media have different temperature resistance and corrosion resistance, so you cannot choose based on price alone.

If the exhaust gas temperature is lower than the dew point, water vapor may condense on the surface of the filter bag; if the temperature is too high, it may cause the filter material to age, shrink or burn. Therefore, it should be ensured that the inlet temperature of the equipment is within the allowable range of the filter material, and condensation should be avoided as much as possible.

8. Processing capacity and installation scope

The processing air volume, filtration area and equipment size of different models of explosion-proof dust collectors vary greatly. When selecting, the overall planning should be made based on the number of vacuum points, workshop layout, pipeline length, equipment height and maintenance space.

1. Reserve space for filter bag or filter cartridge replacement.

2. Reserve operating space for the ash hopper, ash discharge valve and ash collection device.

3. Confirm that the explosion direction will not be towards personnel passages or dangerous areas.

4. Consider rain protection, anti-corrosion, insulation and anti-freeze when installing outdoors.

9. Comprehensive assessment of service life and maintenance costs

The purchase cost of explosion-proof dust collector is only part of the total cost. Long-term costs such as fan energy consumption, compressed air consumption, filter bag replacement, ash discharge maintenance and explosion-proof component inspection should also be considered.

1. Understand the expected replacement cycle of the filter bag or filter cartridge.

2. Understand the maintenance requirements of pulse valves, explosion discs and explosion-proof devices.

3. Check whether the supplier can provide installation, commissioning and maintenance training.

4. Confirm whether commonly used accessories are easy to purchase and replace.

10. Recommended information before selection

1. Dust name, composition, particle size, concentration and explosive characteristics.

2. Actual processing air volume, number of vacuum points and operating time.

3. Exhaust gas temperature, humidity and whether it is corrosive.

4. On-site installation dimensions, pipe direction and power supply conditions.

5. Emission requirements and explosion-proof level of the equipment installation area.

6. Whether automatic dust cleaning, automatic dust discharge, frequency conversion control or remote monitoring is required.

The explosion-proof dust collector is part of the industrial dust explosion-proof system and cannot be purchased as an ordinary indoor air purifier. The actual equipment should be specially designed based on dust explosion characteristics, processing air volume, on-site hazardous areas and relevant safety requirements.
